Payal Chakraborty

Born: 1981, New Delhi, India
Lives and Works: London, United Kingdom

Born in India and currently living in London, as a mixed-media artist Payal’s practice emerges from within the situations of contemporary times. The autobiographical contexts of human emotions and psyche have been the dominant subject for her practice in India, where she participated in a few group exhibitions. The most appreciated is ‘the Perfect’ as a part of the artist residency exhibition ‘Frau’ at NIV.

Subjecting the issue of scrap and landfills became the core of Payal’s Graduation Show at London Met. The series, ‘Wall of Curios’ has been published as a case study by Esperimenti Architettonici in Italy, subjecting the mass-produced non-utilitarian scrap as invisible building blocks, co-existing in dissonance with human existence, in a true sense is a reflection of our society.

Constantly evolving practice through medium and scale, Payal focuses on examining the dynamics of the structural fabric of the interconnectedness between humans, culture, nature, and the environment. Her current research-based practice examines human existence as a progressive society, imploding inside the audaciously fabricated complex structure while ignoring the dominant awareness of sustainability in diverse cultures and their traditional practices.
