Peter Hawkins

Peter Hawkins is a British artist who paints on found surfaces rather than canvas. Peter has produced artwork on old school desks, doors and floorboards. He enjoys the contrast between the smoothness of oil paint and rough-hewn surfaces that have been marked and weathered by time. Childhood has always been an important theme and inspiration for Peter, though much of his recent work is preoccupied with ballerinas and rodeos. We love the way Peter uses sweeping brushstrokes and dribbles of paint to achieve a sense of motion in these paintings.

Peter was born in Panama City and spent his childhood travelling the world with his parents. He never received formal art training, which is something of a surprise given his extraordinary skill.

In 2007, the artist won first prize at the inaugural Mourant Stepping Up Art Competition with his painting of ‘A Couple of Guernsey Cows’.
