Impressionistic paintings typically depict landscapes or scenes from everyday life, aiming to capture ‘impressions’ of fleeting moments. Originating in France, modern Impressionistic paintings are characterised by loose brushwork, attention to light and a sense of movement. Contemporary artists might respond to Impressionism in various ways, from meticulously recreating light in a still life to incorporating new visual technologies, such as photography, into familiar scenes.
The Impressionist movement was pioneered by modern artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas. They broke from tradition by rejecting the established style of academic realism and developing new techniques – painting outdoors and using unblended colour. By applying these new strategies to traditional countryside landscapes, the artists responded to developments such as photography, producing spontaneous observations of light.
Impressionist painters were also fascinated by new scenes of industrial modernity, capturing cityscapes and scenes from Parisian nightlife. Working with vivid colours to capture the ephemeral effects of light in everyday life, the subjects of Impressionistic paintings often include elements of spontaneity and transience.
Claire Cansick’s oil paintings depict mysterious and sleepy settings, bathed in light and colour. Known for her renderings of dappled light on water, subtly including her own shadow or figure, Cansick distils intimate moments of silence into abstracted swathes of colour. In artworks like Selkie Selfie (2024), the artist imbues the landscapes she paints with a contemplative atmosphere, and adds a contemporary twist – subtly referencing the digital age.
Russian artist Anna Sudbina’s abstracted interiors combine a fragmented style with an intimate perspective. Artworks such as French Breakfast (Inside a Faberge Egg) (2021), depict everyday scenes, with refracted planes of colour, creating a fantastical perspective. The artist’s interplay of colour and light create allusive and intriguing paintings which call to mind the Impressionist style – capturing fleeting moments of daily life.
Likewise, the influence of Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet is evident in the work of James Mackeown. Working in oil, the artist expertly captures the fleeting interplay of light on water in the rural and coastal landscapes of Ireland and Brittany. In Les reflects (2024), Mackeown uses thick, pointillist, strokes of colour to build up an expertly crafted woodland scene.
