Annabelle Shelton

London-born artist Annabelle Shelton creates figurative paintings and drawings that explore the negative space within a piece of art. Annabelle’s work is often characterised by scenes of crowds as she is interested in how people come together in certain spaces. Annabelle is an interdisciplinary artist, working with watercolours, acrylic and often using spray paint on aluminium. Whilst her figures are detailed and injected with a realist sense of energy, Annabelle leaves the backgrounds completely empty, so as to draw attention to the space that exists between us.

Annabelle Shelton’s Life and Career

Annabelle was born in London, where she has shown in countless exhibitions, fairs and group shows throughout her career. Having completed a BA, Post Graduate Diploma and MA in Fine Art, for the last twenty years, Annabelle’s intricate and captivating paintings have established her throughout the UK and Europe. Now Based in Milton Keynes, Annabelle has spent her career creating empty landscapes shaped by the interactions between figures.

Annabelle and Watercolour

Annabelle’s approach is unique in her use of watercolour. Whilst watercolour landscapes are typically associated with an impressionist style, Annabelle uses watercolours to create detailed scenes and immense detail. The subdued colours of watercolours allow Annabelle to effectively form scenes without creating such a stark contrast between the subject and backdrop. Annabelle’s large scale painting Beach Escape was included in The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, with her use of perspective further drawing attention to the absence of form and the impact of space.
