More Works by Michael Coppelov
Michael Coppelov
Michael Coppelov is a multidisciplinary abstract artist whose core focus is our modern, interconnected world. With symbols, signs and settings coalescing into literal and metaphorical multi-faceted canvases, Michael's imaginative paintings and animations explore complex contemporary realms. Born in Lancashire in 1983, the artist now lives and works in London.

Michael Coppelov’s Creative Process

Michael attended the Ruskin School of Fine Art at Oxford University (2005) and then completed an MFA at the Glasgow School of Art (2008). Michael is more invested in the creative process than the outcome of his work. The artist invents symbols and characters and fills his landscapes with his own nonsensical languages. There is something structured and yet improvised about his geometric oil paintings; although sensitive and considered, Michael's approach to art is one of discovery and risk-taking.

Scholarships and Awards

Michael Coppelov has been the recipient of numerous prestigious prizes and awards including a two-year scholarship from the Leverhulme Trust. Of late, Michael was an Artist-in-Residence at NES in Iceland and, more recently, at Husk in London. Latterly, Michael completed two years on the Studio Programme at Turps Banana and found himself shortlisted for the Jackson's Painting Prize and Bloomberg's New Contemporaries in 2020.
