More Works by Sophie Anne Wyth
Sophie Anne Wyth
Wyth became a painter through undergoing art therapy. This initial approach brought a sense of freedom to her practice. She creates abstract paintings with no visual support, looking within to find forms and listening to what the paint calls for. There is no predefined direction the picture should take, allowing for creativity throughout the process.

Each abstract image is a snapshot of a larger motion, solid at this moment but which could dissolve in an instant - like a life.

In her early twenties Wyth thought that choosing a job, marital status and location was a decision made once and for all. It took some deep questioning of her identity and sexual orientation to realise that a happy life is to be reviewed and recreated constantly. Wyth’s abstract work is a representation of this constant internal quest, and can be unsettling as a result. It also conveys a sense of strength and calm which is a direct outcome of this investigation.

Wyth presented her first solo show in London in 2018, and has participated in group shows around the UK, including D contemporary in Mayfair and Copeland gallery as part of the Every Woman Biennial London exhibition. Wyth was a finalist in the Celeste Prize in 2017 and her work was featured in Elle decoration UK in 2020. In 2024 Wyth exhibited at The Art’Otel gallery and shows some embroidery works in Southwark Park galleries until December 2024.
