Not sure where to start? British photographer, Martin Thompson creates evocative pinhole photographs, filled with a strong and unflinching sense of nostalgia. By combining the ethereal and somewhat antique appearance of the photographs with recognisable popular culture subject matter, Thompson creates intrigue and mystery with each of his photographs.
The pinhole camera is largely recognised as the first ‘purpose-made’ camera. Pinhole photography works as light passes through the pinhole of the camera and the image is formed in the light-proof box of the camera. As pinhole cameras are lensless, the image tends to be softer than that of a typical film camera. Due to this softness and the often long process of exposure, an incredible sense of depth can be achieved with pinhole photography. Although the history of the pinhole process can be traced back to Aristotle, pinhole photography became popular worldwide in the late nineteenth century, and still remains in use today.
