Styling with art: Cut-outs

Using Kristin Gaudio-Endsley's painting, 'The Shirt' as a spring board for this weeks room, we focus on summer trend, cut-outs. An abstract artist influenced by organic and manmade patterns and colours found in both internal and external environments, her works ask the viewer to participate in interpretation. Cut-outs beg to be interpreted but in terms of styling, we thought that we'd chose pieces that call back to it, imitate the palate and let the work speak for itself.

The Shirt

Cut-outs are very on trend at the moment, with Matisse's cut out works at the Tate, bold shapes and ice-cream colours in stores - we thought that Kristin Gaudio-Endsley's piece, 'The Shirt' would make an excellent focus piece for this week's room. We love the palate and the shapes so had that in mind when creating this look. The striped edge flatweave rug from Anthroplogie mimicks the background and paired with the stools (in the same tones as the painting) on top, you have a living cut-out work on your floor! The Kube cushion by A Mind's Eye calls to the black shapes in the painting, making it almost an extension of the work. Our favourite peice though, is the Harrow quilt from Meg Callahan - quilts are the ultimate cut out work after all!
