Rise Art Q&A: KEF!

The works of German street artist KEF! grace the walls of London, Bristol, Berlin, Paris, and Tel Aviv. The flowing linear nature of KEF!’s work is inspired by organic forms found in nature which radiate vibrant energy which is tempered by the soft colouring amidst the strong black outlines. Lines are so integral to KEF!’s compositions that he often titles his work after the number of lines within them.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is KEF!, a 25 year old painter based in Berlin since February 2015.

Why art?

Because it was the best way to spread a peaceful message. I always found it more difficult to express peaceful feelings with words. With painting, I have the feeling I can go deeper into harmony and aestheticism, which for me are the keys to access peacefulness.

How did you get into art? Is it necessary to go to art school?

I believe art schools are overrated. I started to play around in the streets by doing graffiti and slowly found my own language to express myself.

How would you describe your work in 3 words?

Harmony, peace & hypnotic.

What are your favourite materials to use - or what materials do you find challenging or produce results which surprised you?

I enjoy spray cans very much. Of course, you get use to them well only with practicing - and in the beginning they can be a bit tough. But now, I find them very fulfilling.

On average, how long does it take to complete a piece?

It depends on the medium (from a big wall to the canvas) but on average it takes me two days to complete an artwork.

KEF!

Who are your 3 favourite artists or influencers?

Paul Klee for his freedom, 108 for his aesthetic, and Jonathan Meese for his rebellion.

What type of setting do you visualise your work in?

It is very important for me to make my work fit into any kind of surrounding. I enjoy working with space very much and love the challenge of creating a unique piece that only works because of the environment. So, any kind of setting would do!

KEF!

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I like when I hear viewers saying that they can « feel »  my paintings.

Who would be your ideal client to commission a piece?

I already have my ideal client: It’s Urban Outfitters! ;)

What is your dream project?

I have lots of dream projects. Now, one of my dreams is to go Brazil, to travel, and to paint at the same time.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

'Find a normal job'' because I did exactly the contrary and here I am, painting, traveling and doing exhibitions!

If you could own one work of art from Rise Art what would it be?

I would like to own 'Aqueous VII' by Hetty Haxworth!
