HIX AWARD 2019, HIX ART

The annual HIX Award is back, with fifteen shortlisted artists exhibiting at HIX ART in Shoreditch and vying for the £10,000 prize and a solo exhibition at the gallery. Having been founded by art collector and restaurateur Mark Hix in 2013, the HIX Award is an open call submission competition, open to all students or recent graduates of UK based art schools, that aims to promote the work of emerging artists as well as assisting them to make the transition from art school to an art career. Amongst this year's shortlist are Yulia Iosilzon and Gabriel Giroletti, MA graduates of the Royal College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art respectively, who's work will be recognisable to those well versed with London’s emerging art scene, as both young artists have stood out while exhibiting around the capital in high-profile group exhibitions. Both artists have also been included in this years prestigious Bloomberg New Contemporaries survey of recent graduates, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, which is currently on display at Leeds Art Gallery until November 17th, before travelling to the South London gallery (open 6th December - 23rd Feb).

Lucy Gregory is another favourite of mine on this year’s shortlist, her anthropomorphised kinetic sculptures have been a popular feature in recent exhibitions such as the annual ‘FBA Futures’ and Guts Gallery’s inaugural show. With previous winner of the HIX Award including Felix Treadwell, Ally McIntyre and Joshua Raz, it’s clear that the award not only has an eye for talent, but also successful helps young artists fulfill their potential. This year the prize has the sponsored backing of major commercial gallery Hauser & Wirth, with Iwan Wirth, Eliza Bonham-Carter (Royal Academy of Arts), Dylan Jones (GQ), Joe Kennedy (Unit London) and Charming Baker (artist) completing the judging. Visitors to the exhibition also get their say, and can vote via a ballot system for their favorite for the People’s Choice award.
