Caroline Burghardt’s current practice is centered on collages as well as prints, that often incorporate painting and drawing. The artist combines countering dynamics in order to investigate ideas of simultaneity and duality. The work plays with the juxtaposition of oppositions such as: flatness and depth; illusionary space and tactile abstraction; weightlessness and solidity; delicate patterns and hard edge planes. The resulting compositions, while remaining harmoniously balanced, contain moments of surreal optical disjuncture - intersecting and bifurcating planes and lines often do not align or orient in a logical manner. Her newest pieces also reference the fractal forms of prisms and crystals, and explore the (im)possibility of visualizing the 4th dimension.
Burghardt’s work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows including: The DUMBO Arts Festival, NY; Luhring Augustine, NY; ISE Cultural Foundation, NY; National YoungArts Foundation, Miami, FL; Hasted Kraeutler, NY; A.I.R. Gallery, NY; The Minnesota Center for Photography, Minneapolis, MN; Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Grand Rapids, MI; Center for Visual Arts, Toledo, OH; and Southern Exposure, San Francisco, CA. She received a BA in painting and photography from Bard College in 1997 and an MFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art in 2003. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
