Laura Obon is a Spanish, London-based collagist and painter from Tenerife. She creates colourful geometric collages governed by the power of colour and intuition. Creating from a place of feeling and spontaneity rather than from the realms of reason, Laura permits her inner self to take control.
Laura Obon’s Education and Inspiration
From a very young age, Laura enjoyed making art with her hands as a means of self-exploration. The artist holds a BA in Fine Art from Sheffield University, an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, and a PGCE in Art and Design from Goldsmith, University of the Arts. Inspired by the teachings of Alain De Botton and John Armstrong, Laura views art as an experience for the soul and seeks to explore the therapeutic effects of making and sharing art as an antidote to mundane life.
Practice
At a glance, Laura’s practice resides within a modernist field of candid and improvised abstraction, glistening with gloriously bright colours and piercing shapes. On deeper inspection, Laura laces her paper compositions with deep feeling and emotion. In this way, her art is a tool to explore our emotional and physical worlds.
Press and Exhibitions
Laura regularly exhibits in both solo and group exhibitions held internationally, including in the UK, South Korea, Spain and the US. She has also been appointed for several public commissions, most notably by the Rotherham General Hospital, Rotherham, UK and the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, UK.
