Alison Johnson is an internationally renowned artist, known for creating atmospheric paintings of dynamic seascapes. The artist deftly handles the worlds she creates so that each artwork becomes an original, abstract landscape.
Invoking the sublime power of J. M. W. Turner’s work, but with a contemporary twist, Alison Johnson’s abstract seascapes explore the ephemerality of the natural world. Blending impressionism with modern forms and vibrant colours, Johnson’s oil paintings reveal a surreal side to the natural world.
JOHNSON’S EDUCATION AND CAREER
Born in Warwickshire, Alison Johnson originally trained as a nurse before pursuing a career as a landscape artist. Johnson is self-taught with no formal art training. The response to her early coastal paintings was tremendous, celebrating her deft handling of light, colours and movement, and has paved the way for an enviable painting career.
Johnson has enjoyed international recognition for her landscape paintings, with exhibitions in contemporary galleries across Europe, the US and the Middle East. The artist has undertaken numerous prestigious commissions worldwide, working with clients such as the Prince of Saudi Arabia and London’s Waldorf Hotel. Johnson’s abstract artwork has also been featured in top publications like GQ.
ALISON JOHNSON ART STYLE AND PRACTICE
Alison Johnson works primarily in oil paint on canvas, building up expressive brushstrokes over a wash of colours. Painting from her studio, Johnson applies thick textured paint with a palette knife alongside brush-blended hues, capturing the intricate play of light on water.
The artist’s highly evocative fine art oil paintings, such as Swell (2019), play with light and alternate textures, evoking the movement of the sea. Johnson combines sombre colour palettes with splashes of sparkling white light and vivid colours to create an ethereal and dynamic atmosphere. Alison Johnson’s contemporary abstract artwork recalls the fluid landscapes of Salvador DalÃ, prompting the viewer to consider the intriguing depth beneath the surface of the canvas.
