What is Optical Art?

Optical Art, or Op Art as its often known, is a form of geometric abstract art. Consisting of patterns, measured arrangements and symmetrical compositions, optical art refers to works of art that create an illusion of depth or movement. Op art is sometimes subtle and at other times dramatic in effect, encouraging the viewer to alter their position to experience a different visual effect.

The History of Optical Art

Optical art came about in the 1960s as an extension of abstraction. Elements of op art can be seen in previous artistic movements of the 19th and 20th century, such as Impressionism, Cubism and Dada art. Artists such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely propelled the movement forward with their harmonious frameworks of geometric forms and monochrome palettes.
