Guest Curation: Karen Vidangos

In this curated selection of artworks, social media specialist and curator Karen Vidangos has chosen pieces by Latina artists who employ the female form, offering a diverse array of perspectives on what it means to be a woman. While some of these artists may not have explicitly set out to explore themes of femininity, their work, nonetheless, resonates with the complexities and nuances of womanhood. The intent behind each piece varies, yet they are all united by the distinct gaze of Latina creators—an underrepresented group in the art world. This collection is a celebration of their unique voices and the rich tapestry of experiences they bring to the depiction of the female form.

Vidangos is the founder of Latinx Art Collective, the first nationwide database exclusively for Latinx artists in the United States and Caribbean. She is currently the Social Media Manager for the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Vidangos has created engaging strategies to support the National Portrait Gallery’s 2019 American Portrait Gala and the 2021 Obama Portraits Tour. In 2021, she was selected to lead the social media strategy and launch of the Smithsonian’s institution-wide initiative, Our Shared Future: Reckoning with Our Racial Past, a collaborative platform that explores the history and legacy of race and racism in the United States and beyond.
