Description

Juror's Statement
I was honored to be invited to jury the Portrait exhibition for PhotoPlace Gallery. The task of jurying work is always a challenge. I spent hours each day becoming familiar with the every image before making my final selections. There was a wide range of styles - classical fine art, fictional narratives, documentary; color, black and white, duotone, wet-plate collodion and other photographic processes. In the end, I chose to go for individual images that captured my attention each time I went through the entire collection.

My Jurors Award went to Kent Meister. In his portrait “Maisha & Victor, Prospect Park Lakeside, Brooklyn” I feel a kind of magic between the couple in the Brooklyn Park setting. My Director’s Award went to Terry Wild for his classic black and white portrait of Imogen Cunningham — known as the "Grandmother of Photography” — in honor of her seminal role in popularizing photography in its early years.

My ‘Honorable Mentions’ point to four outstanding works, all with differing photographic points of view. Juno Gemes’s dynamic portrait of HH The Dalai Lama; Jeremiah Dine’s abstract portrait in a prism of light; and Susan May Tell’s “Man Through A Van, San Francisco” capturing a unique point in time.

Please also view the Online Gallery with its eclectic mix of pop-culture portraits and other images ranging from dream-like to realistic.

I’m proud of the outstanding group of participants for this exhibition, both online and hanging in the gallery. Many thanks to all who entered, your work was seen and admired.
