Philip Tyler

Born in London in 1964, Philip Tyler is a UK-based artist who works with a variety of different media, including acrylic paints, oil paints and drawing. His work is mostly figurative, taking nudes as one of his central subjects, yet imbuing each piece with his unique style and a deep sense of emotion. These are pieces that explore complex topics such as grief, loss and the sublime, using thick blocks of colour to capture the contours of his subjects’ bodies.

Philip Tyler’s Career

Philip began his artistic training at the University of Loughborough before moving on to Brighton for his MA in Printmaking. Since the mid 1980s, he has been developing his characteristic style of nude painting while working with other media such as photography. This cross-disciplinary approach informs all of his work, as he often uses his photographs as source material for painting rather than live models. Philip has achieved success throughout his career, exhibiting widely and earning the Young Artists South East prize in 1991.
