Lesley Bunch

Lesley Bunch is a painter who lives and works in London. In 2022 she was awarded the Contemporary British Painting prize and became a member of the artist-led group.

In her paintings shadows are detached from, and cannot signify, the objects that cast them; machine components are isolated, scaled-up, floating, and denied any conventional function.

She refers to her paintings as 'a visual language resisting verbal interpretation, untied to literal meaning', an 'absented presence sitting silently in the globalised, unanchored over-information that we increasingly drift in'.

Lesley builds her paintings in fine, flat, transparent layers, employing close observation of light, reflection, refraction and shade. There is a meticulous attention to detail as she 'sculpts with colour'. Her shadows are presented as lit and luminous physical objects.

Lesley studied Fine Art and Art History at Goldsmiths' College and Archaeology at SOAS, focusing on Japan's Edo period. She has been influenced by Japan's art and culture. She likens her paintings to Zen koans, riddles posed to transcend limitations of dualistic thinking, logical reasoning and language.

Exhibition highlights include solo shows in Rome, Seoul, and London, and group shows '50th International Award Exhibition' San Diego Art Institute; 'X - Contemporary British Painting' Newcastle Contemporary Art; 'Stand and See' Wimbledon Space UAL; and 'Ten Artists to Watch' LACDA.
