Paul Anderson Morrow

Paul is an abstract painter working on wood and paper. Aspects of Paul’s practice are biographical in nature and relate to him being the son of a carpenter. His interest and respect for materials and their qualities are explored throughout his work. Paul both realises and honours these qualities through the process of painting. Paul’s mode of painting is similar across both materials; his practice is concerned with the physical act of painting, anchored in the moment and the immediacy of the gesture. This is balanced by the considered and objective gaze, his practice moves between these two stages as the painting progresses. In the formative stages of the painting colours and forms are generated through a series of marks that can be considered automatic in nature. These marks are then considered, an intervention is then made to keep or remove the marks. The compositions unfold over a period of time in a manner that could be described as an intuitive, moving between the subjective act of painting and the objective act of viewing until a composition is resolved.
Paul was educated at Central St Martins and Goldsmiths College and has exhibited widely, he has worked in collaboration with fashion designers Marques Almeida worn by Billie Eilish and Michelle Obama. Paul has a keen interest in inclusion and co-authored the Cultural Inclusion Manifesto. Paul is an advisor to the London Mayor’s Liberty festival and he is currently writing a book on Arts, Culture and Inclusion.
