Malayka Gormally work is concerned with the intersection between race and generation, particularly in regard to human emotion and vulnerability. Gormally expertly captures the intricacies of social dynamics through the naturalism of her subjects; mundane scenes of chatter and conversation are backlit with pastel colour blocks which draw the eye inwards.
Athol Whitmore is a cross disciplinary artist. His work possesses a childlike playfulness and includes concepts of youth, childhood, wonder and mischief. Whitmore’s stylised subjects seem to draw inspiration from the rosy-cheeked kids that populated 1950’s mainstream media. His plate series, including Georgie podgie and Hush 2017 are gleaming examples of elevated cartoon art.
Finally, much of Ellannah Sadkin work is inspired by many of our first encounters with the genre: Disney. Sadkin reimagines iconic Disney characters, providing a composition that is fresh, at times abstract and always thought-provoking. The heroes and heroines of Sadkin’s work are faceless, as she finds new ways to tell familiar stories.
