Kyle Ford is an international artist based in Hong Kong. His work focuses on interactions with the natural world. Kyle’s two artworks City Study (Day) and City Study (Night) (2018) depict Hong Kong at different times of the day. In these images the buildings are cropped, giving the impression that they continuously rise up out of each other. This makes the viewer feel small or insignificant, as if one is dwarfed by the never-ending buildings.
Hong Kong is a coastal city in Southern China. It was once a fishing village and salt production site and has now grown into an international financial centre.
The area has an interesting and tumultuous history. The British Empire gained control of Hong Kong in 1842 but returned to Chinese rule in 1997. This international intervention has created a diverse and metropolitan city rich with culture and contemporary art.
The city is characterised by its large financial district, made up of skyscrapers which cluster against the water with the mountains behind. Many artists find this juxtaposing landscape an exciting source of inspiration.
