Lena Szankay is an Argentian photographer who has worked extensively in Berlin. Having lived through the fall of the wall in the German capital, Szankay has plenty of life experience to create documentary photography that packs a punch. While her focus is on documenting the realities of life, Szankay maintains a strong emotional current throughout her work.
The term documentary art was first associated with a group of artists in the 1930s, who put paintbrush to canvas to document the harsh realities of life in the UK during The Great Depression. Artists such as Julian Trevelyan would paint the everyday scenes around them, adopting a realist style in order to capture the harshness of life during this period.
