Sue Kennington

Born: 1955 in London, United Kingdom
Lives and Works: Rome, Italy

Abstract paintings by Sue Kennington are a deep dive into the communicative powers of colour. The artist trained in London at Goldsmiths College (MFA, 2002) and Chelsea College of Art (BA Painting, 1994) and currently lives in central Italy. She spends her time working between there and her studio in the San Lorenzo district of Rome.

Sue Kennington’s Exploration of Colour

Sue channels the infinite possibilities of colour as an emotive visual language, passionately studying the interaction between light, colour and contrast. The artist is also particularly interested in how the use of colour and human-touch can work as an expressive medium. Her abstract paintings, which often integrate and morph rural and botanical colour schemes and subject matter, have an immense tactility. Sue juggles opposing principles of rational and intuitive artistic gestures, mixing frank brushstrokes and amorphous shapes.

Recent London exhibitions include ‘Glimpse’ at Golborne Gallery, ‘Colour, Order, System’ at Sid Motion Gallery, and ‘Imperfect Reverse’ at Camberwell Arts Space in 2017. Sue has also exhibited her paintings at C2 Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. In 2019, Sue was selected for the Premio Lissone prize at MAC Museo d`Arte Contemporanea in Lissone, Italy. In 2023, Kennington had a very successful solo show, 'Clearing', at Curva Pura Gallery in Rome, Italy.
