Sonia Martin is a British artist based in Southeast London, where she creates mainly oil paintings, etchings, and monotypes. Her art deals with themes such as memory, mortality and the search for freedom, depicting human subjects and exploring their relationships to each other and the landscapes that surround them. Sonia’s paintings and prints show everyday scenes in an intriguing way, delving into the connections between past and present as well as blurring the lines between reality and imagination.
Sonia Martin’s Career
Sonia has extensive training, having studied Fine Art at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as completing a Masters in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art in London. Her portrait art has clearly been influenced by her international experiences, as she has taken part in numerous residencies in countries such as Ireland, Spain, Bolivia, India, and Mexico. Since 2017, Sonia has been part of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
Exhibitions, Collections and Awards
Sonia’s portrait paintings have been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions, most notably at the Royal Academy, the Barbican and the Bankside Gallery, among many others. You’ll find her work in public collections such as University of the Arts London and various Oxford and Cambridge colleges. In 2021, she received a Pollock-Krasner award for her work.
