Scotland based Artist Samantha Cheevers graduated from Gray's school of Art in 2018 with BA (Hons) Painting. Since graduating Samantha was selected for the Aberdeen Arts Centre Graduate Award and The Royal Scottish Academy New Contemporaries Exhibition 2019. Whilst exhibiting in the RSA New Contemporaries she was awarded The Art in Healthcare Purchase Prize, The David and June Gordon Memorial Award and the Glenfiddich Artist in Residence Award. During the three month residency at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, she produced a variety of work and exhibited alongside selected international artists. Samantha recently had a solo show in Glasgow Cass Art as part of the Cass Art Exhibition Prize which she was presented during the Society of Scottish Artists & Visual Arts Scotland OPEN Exhibition.
Samantha explores multiple locations and many are derelict architectures. She collects photography and documentation in the buildings, which become key elements in creating a narrative for her work. The interior and exterior tends to be over exaggerated whether it be nature taking over the structures or filled with objects, furnishings and even animals related to previous locations, suspending the viewer in ambiguity, not quite knowing which images are related or exist in a realm of their own. She uses various materials and techniques in her work ranging from watercolour pigments to engraving, creating depth and layers that mirror the aesthetic of the interiors.
