Kjell Folkvord's artistic philosophy aligns with Aristotle's belief that art should convey inner significance rather than mere outward appearance.
LANGUAGE OF COLOUR AND FORM
He aims to translate his inner landscape into visual form through the interplay of colour, line, and form. For Folkvord, colours function as a kind of alphabet, combining to create visual "words." His creative process is one of exploration, where a particular colour might suggest a complementary hue, prompting him to seek it out or mix it himself. He draws upon his personal experiences, emotions, memories, and cognitive resources as essential tools in his artistic endeavors.
FOLKVORD'S PRACTICE
Folkvord's approach is characterized by a spirit of experimentation, a willingness to explore uncharted artistic territories. His primary medium is acrylic on canvas, though he also creates compositions on paper. Series are a recurring motif in his work, exemplified by "A Year - Portraits of Twelve Months," a series inspired by his childhood memories of Norway. While his style is abstract, his works often maintain connections to specific ideas or objects. Titles play an important role in his conceptual framework, though he consciously avoids over-determining the viewer's interpretation, encouraging individual connections with his paintings.
Originally from Norway, Kjell Folkvord relocated to London in 2010. He has been a full-time artist at Delta House Studios since 2018.
