Harland Viney

Born: 1970 in Brisbane, Australia
Lives and Works: Bridport, United Kingdom

Harland Viney is an Australian artist living in rural England. Working across painting, photography, film and printmaking, Harland is interested in the abject, the uncontrollable, and the things we want to contain.

Harland Viney’s Early Career & Style

Harland studied at Bath Spa University and the University of Tasmania, graduating in the UK in 2011. Her style is one of exploration and extrication. Her black-and-white portraits and expressionistic landscape paintings intentionally convey layers of manipulation. The artist emphasises shifting states and ambiguity to delve into our paradoxical relationship with nature and the unknown. Her enigmatic oil paintings demonstrate an atmospheric and almost haunting junction between colour and texture, resulting in scenes of alluring mystery, pregnant with fantasy.

Press & Exhibitions

Harland was selected for the prestigious John Ruskin Prize in 2017 and has featured in many independent magazines: Shots, Diffusion Magazine, F-Stop and SIETIES, to name a few. Her work is in collections in the USA and UK. Harland has also exhibited her work internationally.
