The South African artist Lebohang Kganye works through sculpture, installation, performance, and cinema, with a particular interest in photography.
Lebohang Kganye uses her art to explore a fictional story and her own imaginary past. By merging real elements with themes of fantasy, she employs her technique of photomontage and printing to insert the familiar into the unknown, thereby creating her own narrative.
Characterized by a digital style in black and white, the layering of images pushes the boundaries of memory, nostalgia, and history.
The Inspiration of Lebohang Kganye
Lebohang Kganye's process is driven by personal and historical events that have shaped her own life. A significant part of her work focuses on the loss of her mother, and she uses her art to reintroduce her mother into her own narrative and vice versa.
By marrying these two memories, she creates surrealistic works with an element of portrait. The rich contrast of monochrome tones in Lebohang Kganye's work creates powerful and intimate narratives.
