Diana Rose Latourt work is infused with a sharp contextual awareness that makes way for classical compositions with an abstract edge. The elongated dimensions of Latourt’s piece Trip with swans (2017) are reminiscent of great hanging tapestries, while the work itself is populated by classic iconographies such as reeds and swans. Latourt’s fabric painting is fresh and vibrant in its execution, however, we love the ancient shadows that occupy the piece.
Alternatively, Eric Wall uses fabric painting to play with concepts of pictorial space and illusion. Wall layers fabrics in his piece Betwixt and between 4(2013) creating depth and dimension by painting on shadows. [Betwixt and between 4] is a patchwork of fabrics, where different fashions, styles and tastes are forced to coexist. Hiding in the acrylic shadows, in between the collaged textiles, history is sandwiched: fabrics of the day create their own paralinguistic timeline.
Fabric painting is a combination of textile and art, swapping the canvas for textured fabric. It can be a painstaking process, as each textile must be washed and dried before it can be reworked, but the results are uniquely textured, exquisite and even ancient-looking. Even today, fabric as an artistic medium feels connected to Hellenistic times when tapestry was an exalted form of art.
