Irene Gronwall is a Swedish painter interested in what lies beneath the surface. Painting in layers of acrylic paint and employing various tools to create texture, Irene explores the movement and rhythm of compositions. Her aim is to create works that viewers can experience rather than understand.
Originally an actor, Irene has been a professional artist for over 20 years. Just as an actor approaches and fills an empty stage, Irene takes the blank canvas and layers it with meaning. Adding and subtracting as she goes, shapes, lines, and colours compete for space in energetic compositions. Inspired by American Expressionism, traces of abstract artists like Kline, Motherwell, and Frankenthaler can be felt in her work. Creating from her Stockholm-based studio, Irene often works in a series of two or three. In some of her paintings, she uses less colour to learn more about the locomotive visual language of form.
Irene studied at Folkuniversitetet Art School, Stockholm, and Gerleborgskolan Art School, Bohuslän. She is currently represented by Gallery Ekvall & Tornblom in Stockholm. Irene has had solo shows throughout Sweden, at Gallery Zeitgeist, Uppsala, Sweden (2021) and Gallery Ekvall & Tornblom (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2021). In 2018, she held a solo show in Milan, Under The Skin, at Mymicro Gallery. In 2017, she participated in a group show in Berlin, Ways of Looking, Vierrumladen Gallery. Irene is a member of The Professional Artist Organisation, KRO.
