Nick Powell is an expressive painter whose works, whether abstract or figurative in style, are inspired by nature and the environment. Often leaving behind evidence of the works’ construction like creative scars, Nick creates gestural compositions that register and evoke myriad emotions.
Nick Powell’s Early Career and Style
Nick lives and works in Norwich, UK. He studied Fine Art at Cumbria College of Art and Design. Nick collects visual material, such as scraps of drawings and notes to flyers, adverts, or personal photos for his subjects. The painting process is highly intuitive - to the extent that his studio space influences the outcome. Nick channels noises, disruptions, or arbitrary peripheral items into the painting's visual development, providing multiple layers and stages of abstraction. Working with wet-in-wet, adding and removing, and using different blending techniques to build his collage-like paintings, Nick takes his time nurturing his paintings' physicality.
Exhibitions
Nick has exhibited across the UK, participating and collaborating in multiple group shows. He has completed private commissions, and his paintings are sought after and collected throughout Europe and the United States. He was awarded a solo show at the Barbican Arts Group Trust in 2012. In 2016, he collaborated with other artists to organise CPE (Contemporary Painters East), a mixed group show of eight painters based in the East of England in Magdalen Street, Norwich.
