British photographer Martin Thompson. Thompson’s latest project, thefacecollective, is a series of 5,000 artist portraits shot on equipment dating back to the mid-1800s. There is a whimsical romance to Thompsons’ photographs, as he captures music legends such as Courtney Barnett, James Bay or Sophie Elis-Bextor.
Baldvin Ringsted uses his background in music as an inspiration for his visual artistic practice. His recent mirror series, which includes Iron Man (2019) Das Model (2019) and Take Five (2019), are literal depictions of music. The sliced mirrors, resembling skewed piano keys, are cut at specific widths and positions to represent the rhythm and notes of different songs or melodies.
Music art is an exploration of the tumultuous and passionate relationship between music and art. The emotional capacity of music means it has long been a source of inspiration for many artists. During the Dada movement in the early 20th century, French composer Erik Satie wrote the music for Jean Cocteau’s infamous one-act play, Parade, while Picasso produced the set design. Music art uses a variety of styles and forms to depict key musical elements such as movement and rhythm. Both Degas and Matisse reimagined music into a two-dimensional artistic form using dancers.
