London cityscapes have undergone as many transformations throughout art history as the city itself. The 18th-century Italian landscape painter Canaletto produced multiple paintings of the River Thames and the newly completed Westminster Bridge.
Caneletto’s painting The Thames and the City (1746-47) offers us a fascinating insight into what London looked like in the 1700s. Multiple spires pierce the skyline with St. Paul's Cathedral towering above the city, clearly visible as low buildings surround it – offering a stark contrast to today’s looming skyscrapers.
As the Industrial Revolution began in England in the 1760s, artists responded to the rapid changes of industrial modernity occurring across the country. The watercolour painter John Crowther chronicled these changes in London, creating 440 works of the city which focused on the expanding railway networks and new potential for quick travel.
Working in the early 1900s, Claude Monet created numerous Impressionist paintings of The Houses of Parliament and Westminster Bridge. Painted en plein air, these paintings are highly atmospheric, responding to fleeting changes of light and movement in the bustling city.
Rise Art offers a variety of affordable London cityscape prints and paintings in abstract and realistic styles. Many of our artists are inspired by London’s busy streets and impressive local architecture. Just as painters throughout art history have been inspired by London, contemporary artists are reimagining the city with fresh eyes and new perspectives – transforming the city we know today.
Angela Edwards creates atmospheric paintings of commuters based on images from media or taken on her phone. In Waiting at the Gate (2024), Edwards evokes a moment of stillness when surrounded by the energy and rush of the city. Illuminated patches of colour convey the dazzling lights and sense of movement as figures sweep past the viewer.
In contrast, French painter Valérie Le Meur creates Impressionist-inspired paintings of life on the river Thames. Working in acrylic, the artist creates vivid portraits of bright canal boats, verdant foliage and dappled light on the water. Paintings such as Boats on the Thames -1- inject a familiar landscape with abstracted forms and a vibrant colour palette.
British artist Georgia Peskett works in oil to create dynamic, realistic cityscapes. In her work Travel Agent (2022), the effect of rain on a window is expertly rendered to recreate the view of an everyday London street scene. Combining vivid neon with a moody colour palette, Peskett recreates the visual contradictions of the city, as well as the beauty glimpsed in an ordinary moment.
