Famous Nude Paintings

Realistic nude paintings have long occupied a significant position in art history – symbolising life, desire and power. The tradition of nude painting flourished during the Renaissance, when artists advanced studies of anatomy and the human body with scientific precision, allowing for greater expressive depth.

One of the most iconic realistic nude paintings is The Birth of Venus (1486) by Sandro Botticelli, which presents idealised female beauty in a mythological context. Artworks are always influenced by styles and tastes of the time, as can be seen in the goddess’ elongated stomach – a symbol of fertility.

In the 19th century, realism evolved with artists like Gustave Courbet, whose painting The Origin of the World (1866) broke taboos around the non-idealised female body. Likewise, Édouard Manet’s Olympia (1863) challenged traditional depictions of nude women as vulnerable or objectified, instead portraying his subject with a direct gaze and unapologetic sensuality.

In modern times, artists like Lucian Freud depicted the nude body with visceral realism, embracing imperfections in order to emphasise the human condition. Evoking vulnerability, physicality and emotional depth, Freud’s work transformed the nude into a powerful and complex artistic statement.

The award-winning figurative artist Karen Turner uses oil paint to celebrate the female body in all its forms. A liberating rawness characterises her work, which seeks to normalise and celebrate larger bodies. Are There Any Questions? is a tender but provocative portrait, in which a woman poses nude, completely at ease in her body which challenges the societal expectations of weight.

Olivier de Géa uses mixed media to create mysterious nude portraits. By combining paint, pencil, and rusted metal, artworks like Let Me Be Free (2020) showcase the artist’s technical skill and experimental approach. The nude female is half-hidden, half-revealed as the body is built around the tactile grain of the rust.

Inspired by modernist nudes, Italian artist Andrea Vandoni’s work reflects art historical inspiration, with a contemporary twist. Careful modelling is combined with flat planes of colour in artworks like Morning (2024). This traditional study of the female form is brought up to date by the intimacy of a moment interrupted, as the subject slips into a dressing gown.
