Lewis Deeney stands out for his unique, interlocking geometric compositions that unify hard edges with sensual painterly forms. His compelling and often paradoxical paintworks harmonise chaos and order, presenting transcendent expanses of bold textures and shimmering colours.
The Scottish-born artist moved to Dundee to pursue a degree in Contemporary Art, graduating with First-Class Honours in 2020. Lewis won the James Guthrie Orchar Memorial Prize and the Farquhar Reid Trust Prize during his degree show. The scholar, also selected for the Freeland's Painting Prize, continued his studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, graduating with an MFA in Art and Humanities in 2021.
Lewis draws from his interest in ancient ancestral wisdom and contemporary science and technological innovations, combining mandala symbols with modern expressionist elements. The resulting introspective works act as a form of visual meditation, cultivating mindfulness and an awareness of the beauty around us, the potential within us, and the connections between us. Lewis fuses old and new in his creative process, paying homage to time-honoured mark-making while using digital media and laser cutters to complete his work.
Within a year of graduating, Lewis had two successful solo shows. Many of his works reside in private and public collections across the UK and Europe. In 2021, Lewis was also a semi-finalist for the following prestigious awards: Visual Art Open Emerging Artist Award, Artist Lounge Artist of the Year, and D31 Art Gallery Prize.
