Meghan Spielman is a woven textile artist located in Bozeman, MT. Her artworks are rooted in dynamic interactions between color, material, and structure. Abstract imagery is methodically built, rather than applied.
Spielman’s strong reverence for heirloom textile objects often influences the geometric nature of her work. Referencing the graphics of historical American quilt and coverlet patterns, she is interested in the long history of female labor creating these domestic items, and the patterns’ ability to evolve into a visual code, indicating a time and place, as well as the maker.
Woven on a 32-harness computerized dobby loom, Spielman’s artworks transcribe archetypal, classic shapes through unconventional and highly tactile material contrasts such as silk boucle, brushed mohair, glass seed beads, and chenille. Color also plays an intrinsic role, usually applied asymmetrically, with moments of high-energy accents amongst plains of rest and reprieve. Ultimately Spielman’s works revere the familiarity and comfort of these timeless patterns while transforming them from the day-to-day.
Spielman's artwork has been exhibited in the US, UK, Canada, France and Australia. She has earned a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in NYC (2013), and a Master’s in Woven Textiles from the Royal College of Art in London (2017).
