Misa Gott

Misa creates images with enigmatic motifs and gestural marks gracefully oscillating on the boundary between semi-abstraction and vaguely recognisable figurative or landscape. Misa is interested in the discourse of ecology and our interconnectedness. She acknowledges the existence of domains in nature that transcend human senses and conceptions and finds inspirations from imaginative stories and myth as well as poetries. Her act of creation serves as a means to explore the enigmatic realm and elusive connections we have with each other and nature. Having grown up in Japan, Misa has always felt her everyday life was intertwined with the way of nature. Her work addresses the theme of affinity with and reverence to nature - the more than human world. Following in the quietly meditative tradition of Japanese nature paintings, she seeks to capture invisible energy or spirits flowing in nature. Misa collects marks and shapes by impulsive & intuitive mark making and collage. Her process reflects nature’s simplicity belying the complexity in the craft and production. Layered with marks and shapes, the final images reveals feeling of figurative forms or landscape emerging. She uses printmaking as a way of making marks. The unpredictability of monotype fuels her imagination when creating images. Guided by spontaneity & intuition, there is a sense of uncovering the image. The images are the results of play between control & chance, randomness & inevitabilities, much like nature itself
