Her work is at once haunting and beautiful, showing how the buildings around us can tell stories of the past.
As one of the world’s oldest art forms, architecture has been central to human life since the earliest days of society. While buildings are mostly viewed as functional places to live, work and meet, they are also works of art in their own right. For this reason, artists working in a variety of different mediums have often drawn upon architecture as inspiration for their own work. Whether it’s in sculpture, photography or painting, architecture often features as a central theme in the visual arts.
Fans of contemporary sculpture will be familiar with the work of Anthony Caro, an English abstract sculptor whose work was strongly influenced by architecture. Using a variety of found industrial objects including scrap metals and beams, Caro created strikingly modern and structural pieces that evoke the lines and shapes we see in the buildings around us. Not only did his own work draw inspiration from architecture, but he also collaborated with architects to create unique artistic projects. Most notably, he collaborated with Norman Foster and Chris Wise to create the London Millennium Footbridge that spans the Thames in central London.
